28 JAN, 2015. The end of December 2014 was sadly marked by three St Louis Sisters’ funerals in the Irish Region. On Christmas Eve the Carrickmacross Community lost their beloved Pia Mulligan SSL after a brief illness. She had been an active member of the community and will be greatly missed. In her introductory reflection at the funeral Mass, Anne Kavanagh SSL paid tribute to Pia as friend, educator and faithful letter-writer, as well as wise counsellor. Then, at the advanced age of 102, Maddie Kelly SSL went to her reward just after Christmas, mourned by the extended Kelly family and her religious family too. Marie Byrne SSL spoke movingly of the ‘character’ that was Maddie, her wonderful life-long dedication to musical education, her talented handiwork and life-long dedication to family. Then also on Dec 26, Colmcille Stephens SSL, Superior General of our Congregation for many years, died in Dealgan Nursing Home, Dundalk. She had arranged, with due procedure, that her body be donated to science. Her family was aware of this last great act of generosity made several years ago while she was teaching in Nigeria. At her funeral Mass, Anne Kavanagh SSL reflected comprehensively on the life of a great religious leader to whom so many are greatly indebted, while her Mill Road Community, so dedicated to her in these latter years, organised an inspiring liturgy. We continue to pray in gratitude for the repose of the souls of these mighty women, dedicated St Louis sisters.
