The newly-established École Maternelle et Primaire Bilingue Saint Louis de Savé, République du Bénin, welcomed its first 23 students to its school on September 28, 2020. The school, owned and run by the Sisters of St Louis, was officially opened on October 10, 2020 by his lordship, Mgr François-Xavier Gnonhossou SMA.

In 2001, the Nigeria Province started a health care ministry in Akpassi in the diocese of Dassa Zoumé, Republic of Benin. In 2013, the Provincial Postulancy was moved from Zonkwa, Nigeria, to Dassa, with the intention of attracting vocations from a French-speaking area, to remind us of our connection with France, our origin. While the plan to run a school in the diocese has been there since 2001, it had not been feasible until more recently, when the present Bishop, Monseigneur François Gnonhossou, impressed by the commitment of the Sisters of St Louis to the education of the young, put out a renewed invitation to them to start a school in Savé, one of the educationally-disadvantaged areas in the diocese. In response to this invitation and to our mission statement to be in solidarity with the poor and the marginalized, the Sisters of St Louis accepted the challenge to begin a new mission in Savè. On February 15, 2019, two Sisters, Theresa Peter Sheyin SSL and Constance Dibie SSL, were missioned to Savé. Thanks to the support of Misean Cara the Sisters of St Louis received funding for two blocks of seven classrooms and an administrative office and construction began.

The school was finally ready to welcome its first students for the 2020/2021 academic year! To read more about the official opening of the school, click on the latest edition of Musings, our monthly newsletter – Issue 102.
